During his message this past weekend, Pastor Les set a couple goals for us:

Goal Number 1: Go and bring (not just invite) at least one new person to a StoneRidge weekend church service (Saturday at 6:30 pm or Sunday at 10:30 am) each month for twelve months, beginning November 2011.  That’s a total of 12 persons brought to a weekend service in one year. GO AND BRING! (You can do it!)

Goal Number 2: Regularly attend a weekend ½-hour prayer time each week for twelve months beginning November, 2011. Choice of times:

• Saturday before or after the 6:30 pm. service.
• Sunday before or after the 10:30 am. service.

We’re believing God will provide, through you, StoneRidge, 100 Evangelists and 100 Prayer Warriors.

How did it go the first weekend? As of October 30, 2011 we have…

• 62 prayer warriors
• 45 evangelists

The team begins their long journey home today (Friday). They are scheduled to depart just before midnight local time (mid-afternoon here) with a 16 hour flight to Newark, followed by a much shorter flight back to Halifax. Please pray for them as they travel… and for their luggage to stay with them. You may remember that several members of our 2009 Ecuador team lost their bags during the return trip, never to be found. That thought has probably crossed Rebecca’s mind, as she was on that team, too.

We look forward to having them back with us and hearing of their many adventures in West Bengal, Gangtok, Mumbai and points in between!

The adventures continue for our team in Gangtok!

Pastor Don found himself in a somewhat familiar spot on Sunday morning… the pulpit of a local church, but with a little twist since he doesn’t speak the local language. Thanks to the help of an interpreter, he was able to share God’s word with some of our brothers and sisters in Gangtok. Following that, the team planned to visit a nearby orphanage.

Monday will be a busy day, as the team will again be teaching at conferences for pastors and women. As we mentioned the other day, these conferences had to be shortened to just one day because of our team’s travel delays.

Your prayers are so very important as they continue to serve and minister to the people of India. We are so thankful for God’s hand on each member of this team and look forward to hearing what He has done in and through them during their time in India. Please keep praying for continued good health and stamina during these last few days. The team has specifically asked for prayer for their time… that it be profitable for both themselves and those they are teaching and interacting with.

Because of the highway blockades and travel uncertainty, the conferences planned for Friday and Saturday in Gangtok had to be cancelled. Instead, the team is pulling together a one day conference scheduled for Monday. It’s expected that 50-100 people will be able to attend.

We are grateful for their safe arrival in Gangtok! Please continue to lift  up Pastor Don, Colin, Tara, Lisa, Rebecca and Samantha  in prayer. No doubt they are adjusting to being in another new community, as they roll with changing plans and embark upon this adventure in Gangtok.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday they taught at conferences for pastors and women. Everything went very well. (That’s all we’ve heard about that!)

Here’s where plans changed. On Thursday, the team was supposed to travel to Gangtok in Sikkim province for another conference. However, road blockades and strike actions by the Gurkha people made that impossible. Since there is only one way in and out by ground, they tried to book helicopters. Unfortunately, they were already booked solid due to the blockades.

For now, they will remain in West Bengal and keep an eye on the situation. Instead of traveling on Thursday, the team was able to have some down time and do some sightseeing. If they are unable to travel to Gangtok, they will seek opportunities to serve with other missions where they are.

No doubt God has a purpose in keeping our team in West Bengal, at least for the time being. Please keep praying for them… that they would make wise decisions about travel, that God would open up opportunities for them to serve where they are, for continued good health and that God would use them to draw people to Himself.

That’s the latest! We’ll pass along any news as soon as we get it!

After weeks of preparation, moments of excitement, trepidation and wonder and many, many hours in the air, our Gangtok team arrived safely in Delhi, India on Friday night (local time; they are 9.5 hours ahead of us).  On Saturday, they flew to West Bengal then spent several hours on the road before arriving at their destination.

Today (Sunday) they had the privilege of attending the grand opening of Four Corners church, a new church in West Bengal. Another Canadian team began work on this facility in November. Remarkably, an entire church can be built in India for $10,000!

Monday will be a big day… and probably a little nerve-wracking for some! They will begin teaching at the first of two conferences they’ll be leading while in India. Pastors and lay leaders are excited about this opportunity to learn; many of them have little education and little understanding of English. For some our team members, teaching in this environment is a huge step outside of their comfort zone, with the added challenge of teaching through a translator. On Thursday the team flies to Gangtok, where their second conference begins on Friday.

We are excited for this opportunity to encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ in another part of the world and to reach people for Christ. Please continue to pray for our team and those they will interact with over the next two weeks. No doubt they will have many exciting stories to share about the people they meet, the things they see and what God does in their lives.

And so ends yet another production of This Very Night, our annual retelling of the original Christmas story.

Some TVN 2010 Quick Stats:

• 4,782 lbs of food was collected and donated to Feed Nova Scotia (+ $656.34 cash)
• 240 cast & crew members made it all happen (this included choir, children’s choir, actors, production, audio, video, lighting, web, set builders, ushers, greeters, childcare workers, costumers, animal care, cast dinner prep, clean-up, food packing)
• 282 hand made costumes (that’s a lot of sewing)
• approximately 7,500 volunteer hours (that’s a lot of time)
• over 3,000 in attendance (a lot of people)

If you’ve never been involved in one of our This Very Night productions, here’s what Heather Jackson, the TVN producer had to say about our biggest event of the year:

One of the things that impresses me about TVN is the camaraderie and friendships that are built among cast and crew. It seems to me that, in some ways, there is an even greater benefit to those involved with the play than those who watch it. I think that’s a big reason why people continue to be part of TVN year after year.

We often refer to the Christmas story as one that never grows old. I can honestly say that is absolutely true. I have watched it play out far more times than I could ever count over the last three years, yet it’s fresh and new every time. I’m not quite sure how that works, but it does. And every time I’m struck anew by the beauty and simplicity of its truth.

Every year I think a lot about/pray for the people who will fill the seats – people at every imaginable point in their faith journey – and I wonder how God will use This Very Night to touch them in a unique way. I would love to hear every story, but I know that’s impossible. I look forward to one day meeting these people in heaven and hearing how God used the people of StoneRidge and their gifts to help people take their next step toward Jesus Christ.

This past weekend Pastor Donald reminded us of the importance of remembering those who have served, and continue to serve, in order to preserve our freedom.

A powerful two minutes of silence was observed, after a reading of the first reported two minute silence, and how it came to pass, as described here:

The First Two Minute Silence in London (11th November 1919) as reported in the Manchester Guardian, 12th November 1919.

The first stroke of eleven produced a magical effect.

The tram cars glided into stillness, motors ceased to cough and fume, and stopped dead, and the mighty-limbed dray horses hunched back upon their loads and stopped also, seeming to do it of their own volition.

Someone took off his hat, and with a nervous hesitancy the rest of the men bowed their heads also. Here and there an old soldier could be detected slipping unconsciously into the posture of ‘attention’. An elderly woman, not far away, wiped her eyes, and the man beside her looked white and stern. Everyone stood very still … The hush deepened. It had spread over the whole city and become so pronounced as to impress one with a sense of audibility. It was a silence which was almost pain … And the spirit of memory brooded over it all.

Tomorrow, November 11, please take time to remember.

The Connection Card is the biggest change / improvement. It allows you to connect with us, whether it’s your first visit here or if you’re updating your existing information, and it provides a connection with our Prayer Partner Line, if you have any prayer requests – emergency/crisis or otherwise. (Prayer requests can also be emailed to prayer@srfconnect.com at any time.)

Now, since we’re stuffing each bulletin with a Connection Card every week (we no longer have the luxury of pockets in the backs of chairs for us to place them in), our concern was that we don’t want to be wasteful. We want the Connection Cards back - whether they’re completed, or unused. But let’s be realistic – like Pastor Victor said on Sunday, if you stick your gum in your Connection Card, uh… we don’t want it back.

Green baskets were (and will be) placed at the Welcome Centre, the Community Table (at the back of the auditorium), and at the bottom of the stairwell on your way out, for you to place unused Connection Cards, and you came through for us! A huge number of Cards in excellent condition came back, and we really appreciate it. The even better news was a handful of completed Connection Cards came back to us, which is already a big improvement over the old tear-off style.

Janna Fox, Guayaquil, Ecuador

Janna Fox was in town this weekend and gave us some insight into one of our five cities we partner with through our Missions programs – Guayaquil, Ecuador. Guayaquil is a city with a population of over three million people, so it’s a slight change from her home town of Fall River. Janna serves Christ in Bastion & Campamento el Faro de Esperanza (Lighthouse of Hope camp).

In between services, while ensuring everything was going smoothly with regards to the technical side of things (wireless headset mic, her PowerPoint presentation we were running, etc.), Janna commented, “I’m not used to all this technology!” It wasn’t a complaint; more like pointing out the fact that she now had more things to possibly go wrong and therefore add to the potential stress of public speaking. But things went smoothly, and she was great. A natural at public speaking, and an informative look into where she’s currently serving Jesus. Her comment stuck with me, and made me think how we so easily take things for granted here.

Great to have you here, Janna, and we hope to see you again in the not too distant future.

Yesterday, Geoff Moore sang some of his songs and spoke about his involvement with Compassion, and their sponsorship program designed to help release children from poverty, during the morning services.

Geoff was a natural fit for us, and his message must have had an impact, because 40 children were sponsored thanks to you, our StoneRidge people.

Our parking lot gets a lot of use, so it’s always interesting to see who’s out there. Today the Halifax Regional Police K-9 Unit was here running through some of their training exercises.

I was told it was okay to take some pictures, but where I was crouched down and holding a dark object I had to be careful not to make any sudden moves that might look suspicious (to the police dogs). The advice I received was, if one of the dogs decides to head in your direction, don’t take off running. (Like I could even outrun a wiener dog these days, let alone a police dog.)

The training went well, everyone got in a little work and play time, and I still have all my limbs. A good day.
